III Braga Misericórdia Congress: Memory and Heritage
In the year in which it marks 510 years of existence, Misericórdia of Braga organizes its third congress, under the theme of Memory and Heritage, a meeting that aims to bring together renowned experts and researchers in this area of knowledge, to discuss, share and reflect on the construction and preservation of the memory of the Misericórdias since they were founded, as well as their heritage. A heritage that takes on multiple dimensions and that helps us shape, to a large extent, the memory of these institutions.
Founded at the end of the 14th century, their number multiplied throughout the 16th century, growing in power and complexity, a process that was accompanied by an increase in their heritage, both in quantity and quality. In this gradual process, these brotherhoods accumulated legacies and chapels, inheritances, interest rates and other alms from different sources, which formed the basis for strengthening their heritage, enriched by the annexation of care and hospital units.
It is this memory that spanned centuries, transmitted to successive generations, based on a heritage that grew throughout the Modern Age and that today materializes in different ways and on different media, that we will also talk about at this congress, in order to understand the importance of the challenge of correspond to the trust placed by so many who have benefited from these institutions over time, preserving the legacy heritage that, in essence, constitutes the basis of their identity and the communities in which they developed.
