The SHARE meetings are bi-monthly seminars created, coordinated, and held by doctoral students enrolled in the third cycle of studies at the School of Architecture, Art and Design of the University of Minho / Lab2PT. Besides being an opportunity for doctorate students to meet, each session enables a doctoral student to present the progress of their research and receive contributions from their peers.

 

 

#36 SHARE.EAAD Rui Ferreira | The end of housing (as a typology). An analysis of affordable housing design competitions promoted in Portugal between 2018 and 2023

This session is part of the winter season and counts with the presentation by doctoral student Rui Ferreira.

 

Abstract:
It is unanimously recognized that there is an urgent need for a swift and effective response to current housing demands, both in Europe and in Portugal. In this context, the main public entities responsible for the housing sector in Portugal, such as the IHRU (Institute for Housing and Urban Rehabilitation) and the SRU-Lisboa (Society for Urban Rehabilitation), have promoted various design competitions in recent years aimed at addressing this issue, particularly within the specific case of affordable housing.
This presentation aims to answer the following question: are the standard typology(ies) of the proposed models in line with the challenges and needs of contemporary society?

 

Biography:
Rui Ferreira, architect from the School of Architecture, Art and Design, University of Minho – EAAD-UM (2018). Worked as a researcher at the EAAD-UM Study Center (2018-2023). He is currently a candidate in the EAAD-UM doctoral program and a researcher in the R2U – Timber Modular System research project (since 2023).
