#38 SHARE.EAAD | Maria Maia | Psychiatric spaces in Portugal. Critical trajectories, a research project in Architecture. Pre-Atrium or Preamble
The SHARE meetings are bi-monthly seminars created, coordinated, and held by doctoral students enrolled in the third cycle of studies at the School of Architecture, Art and Design of the University of Minho / Lab2PT. Besides being an opportunity for doctorate students to meet, each session enables a doctoral student to present the progress of their research and receive contributions from their peers.
#38 SHARE.EAAD Maria Maia | Psychiatric spaces in Portugal. Critical trajectories, a research project in Architecture. Pre-Atrium or Preamble
This session is part of the winter season and counts with the presentation by doctoral student Maria Maia.
Abstract:
This doctoral project proposes to investigate the spaces of Psychiatry in Portugal, based on the premise, advanced by Contemporary Psychiatry, that the social, collective and spatial dimensions participate in the therapeutic and emancipatory process of people with experience of mental illness. Architectural research, which has been non-existent until now, is called upon to take part in this debate, and this is where this project finds its great relevance. Focusing on the Portuguese case, it uses the tools of Architecture, at an interdisciplinary crossroads with Psychiatry and History, to approach the subject, analysing the architectural spaces of Psychiatry through a literature review, participatory research on case studies carried out in three psychiatric services with different spatialities and an Atlas: an instrument for recording, synthesising and testing, built as the research develops.
This will result in an ‘Atlas of Psychiatric Spaces in Portugal’ illustrating and communicating the research results.
