SHARE.ICS #9 | Alberto Morán Corte | Population, work, assistance and marginality in early modern Asturias. A personal experience (with some common drawbacks)
The SHARE meetings are bi-monthly seminars created, coordinated, and held by doctoral students enrolled in the third cycle of studies in history, archiology and geography of the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Minho / Lab2PT. Besides being an opportunity for doctorate students to meet, each session enables a doctoral student to present the progress of their research and receive contributions from their peers.
SHARE.ICS #9 Alberto Morán Corte | Population, work, assistance and marginality in early modern Asturias. A personal experience (with some common drawbacks)
In this meeting, in addition to summarizing, explaining and analyzing the content of our PhD, defended at the University of León in 2023 under the title ” Pobreza y asistencia en Asturias durante el siglo XVIII: el modelo de la ciudad de Oviedo “, we will try to go one step further, based on personal experience, we will expose some complications that may be close to all doctoral students.
The research, supported by a diverse documentary sources, was structured in four large categories: the first of them, where the object of study analysis is socio-demographically contextualized. The second focused on the socioeconomic structure of the population. A third in which we focused on the concept of poverty, subjects and social care systems. And a final section dedicated to the main assistance institution of early modern Asturias, the Real Hospicio, but which really showed a double reality between assistance and punishment.
But given that the fact that these questions will seem distant and strange to some doctoral students, based on this experience, we will bring up problems, complications, difficulties and realities with which any doctoral student will feel more identified.
