There are two very special naming practices we find over time and space to designate textile: toponyms and “loan” words. Textiles are labelled so that people can form expectations about them and rely on the reputation tied to the product’s identity. We will discuss and discover the many meanings of toponyms and loan words in greater detail at the seminar “What’s in a name? Toponyms and loan words as textile labels across time” organised within the scope of WG3 (Textile and Clothing Terminologies Group) of EuroWeb – Europe through textiles COST Action (CA 19131). The seminar will be hosted by Lab2PT/IN2PAST, at the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Minho, from 29th June to 1st July 2022. Free entrance.
