On 17 and 18 June, the University of Minho’s School of Architecture, Art and Design will host the artist Annette Brinckerhoff, who will give a workshop on ‘Fundamentals of Botanical Printing’. The workshop, organised by Lab2PT, will take place in the Textile Room of the Garagem Avenida, and is aimed at the UMinho community.
Those interested in taking part in the workshop should register using this Form. Registration are limited to the first 12 participants to formalise it.
Fundamentals of Botanical Printing | Botanical printing is a contemporary technique that adapts the fundamentals of natural dyeing to extract the pigment from the plant directly onto the fabric – in this way, we can capture the shape and subtle nuances of the colours hidden in the leaves. The aim is not necessarily to create a rainbow of colours, but to use the plant material to provide patterns, shapes and textures directly. In this workshop we will follow the entire process of Botanical Printing on fabric and paper. From the various possible pre-treatments to fix and modify the colour; picking dye plants from the area; wrapping strategies; and experimental manipulations that can be applied. After the workshop, participants will be equipped to develop their own botanical printing practice.
Annette Brinckerhoff | Born and raised between Costa Rica, Portugal, and the USA, Annette grew up surrounded by plants and nature. Her obsession with plants stemmed from an unexpected introduction to natural dyeing in Thailand in 2018, which was the beginning of Annette’s journey into the world of natural dyeing. In 2019 she moved back to Portugal, taking advantage of her free time to look for dyeing materials in the local parks, bushes and forests. After the global pandemic, she felt compelled to find peace in local plants, and founded Tinctorium Studio in 2020 – a project that uses dyeing potential to raise awareness about the plants that surround us.
