The event continues the “Conversations on the border” activity, an initiative in which the Consello da Cultura Galega and the University of Minho collaborate with different municipalities in the border region on cultural aspects that are important to them. In this case, the conversation will have to do with one of the immediate consequences of the outbreak of war, the need to modernise the medieval defences along the border between Portugal and Spain. A complex construction process with a major impact on the northern border that completely transformed the defensive landscape on both sides of the River Miño. Today, these fortifications constitute a rich heritage that is studied from different disciplinary areas and continues to grow every day thanks to the combination of new technologies with more traditional studies and the increasingly transdisciplinary approach to researching defensive landscapes. They are also a challenge for heritage management due to their cross-border nature, another of the values that make these landscapes unique, as well as for inter-administrative co-operation in this management.
