In 1981, the figure of the historic garden was defined in the Florence Charter, having been adopted by ICOMOS in 1982.

In Portugal, the Portuguese Association of Historic Gardens is responsible for its protection and promotion. This Association and the Consello da Cultura Galega are organizing, on May 2nd and 3rd, 2025, in Braga, in collaboration with Lab2PT/IN2PAST, a meeting on the historic gardens of Galicia and northern Portugal.
This Meeting includes different interventions on the Route of Historic Gardens of Northern Portugal and the historic gardens of Galicia as heritage elements and tourist instruments, as well as different visits to several gardens in the city of Braga.
