Rebeca Blanco-Rotea is one of the coordinators of this Monographic Meeting on Cultural Heritage: ” The materiality of communal spaces: past, present, and future of rural communities in the Northwestern Iberian Peninsula”.
Community management spaces are a fundamental and highly distinctive part of the landscape of the northwestern Iberian Peninsula. A significant percentage of territories in the NW are common neighborly hillsides. Nowadays, the important contribution of this figure to the social, economic, and environmental life of rural communities is recognized. But these spaces are also axes of multiple conflicts involving a significant diversity of actors with very diverse interests and proposals. New methodological proposals, such as archaeological or ethnographic studies, are revealing their antiquity and complexity, with strong repercussions to the present day.
This meeting has three objectives: 1) to reclaim the long history of community management spaces and the new methodologies that allow for a complex approach to these processes; 2) to understand and debate their current role in shaping rural communities and the conflicts they generate today, as well as collectively reflecting on the role they are called to play in the future; and 3) to return knowledge to the communities themselves by establishing a dialogue with them that allows us to strengthen them for the future.
