On February 12, 2025, the program 90 Segundos de Ciência aired an interview with Helena Paula Carvalho, archaeologist, professor at the University of Minho and integrated researcher at Lab2PT/IN2PAST, about the Cultur-Monts project, an initiative that aims to enhance mountain cultural landscapes, of which she is co-coordinator.
The idea behind the project is to promote the appreciation and use of local heritage as a resource for sustainable territorial development. To this end, a region was selected in the municipalities of Arcos de Valdevez and Terras de Bouro, which includes part of the territory of the Peneda-Gerês National Park.
In this area, research is being carried out along three axes: the first aims to enhance the heritage of transhumance in the Serras do Gerês and Soajo; the second aims to heritageize the historic road network from via 18 or via nova – which is a very important Roman road that connected Braga to Astorga -; and finally, the third axis of the project aims to materially and immaterially enhance the Bread Cycle, which is work being carried out in Arcos de Valdevez by researcher Rebeca Blanco-Rotea, also from Lab2PT/IN2PAST.
In Portugal, in addition to Lab2PT, ADERE – Associação de Desenvolvimento das Regiões do Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês – is also a partner in this project.
The Cultur-Monts project – Valorization of Mountain Cultural Landscapes: a resource for sustainable territorial development is financed by European funds under the Interreg Sudoe program.
This project is led from Spain by the Catalan Institute of Classical Archaeology and involves research teams from Portugal, Spain and France.
