The Lab2PT (Laboratory of Landscapes, Heritage, and Territory) from the University of Minho is a key contributor to the new museological project by the municipality of Guimarães, which revitalized the space of Fornos da Cruz de Pedra, formerly a pottery workshop. On June 24th, this space was reopened as the Centro de Artes e Ofícios dos Fornos da Cruz de Pedra, a place dedicated to preserving and promoting the traditional crafts of the region.
This museological space, set to open to the public at the beginning of August, stands out for promoting the history and legacy of sectors such as pottery, tanning, textiles, and cutlery, areas in which Guimarães has a longstanding tradition.
Lab2PT researchers Isabel Maria Fernandes, Joana Sequeira, and Mónica Faria played crucial roles in the conception of this project. Isabel Maria Fernandes coordinated the scientific component, contributing particularly with her knowledge of pottery, while Joana Sequeira provided consultancy in the area of textiles, and Mónica Faria supported the research and documentation collection on cutlery.
The project, curated by Ideias Emergentes and directed by Susana Milão and Rita Amado, also includes a pottery workshop for educational purposes.
This collaboration between Lab2PT and the municipality of Guimarães not only preserves cultural heritage but also reinforces the laboratory’s commitment to the valorization and promotion of the region’s history and craftsmanship.
