Professor Arnaldo Melo participated in Episode 2 of Season 14 of the television program “Visita Guiada”, entitled “Domus Municipalis and Museu Abade de Baçal, Bragança”.
The program was broadcast on April 8 on RTP2 and is now available on RTP Play.
Synopsis of the episode: In the eighteenth century. In the twelfth century, while trying to assert the new kingdom of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques understood that he needed to ally himself with the people who inhabited this territory. It was not enough to conquer him, it was necessary to establish strong alliances with him. The other warriors, the other great lords of the land, and the clergy (the most solid power at the time) were not only partners in the Reconquista and in the establishment of the new frontiers, they were rivals of the emerging king.
The people, D. Afonso Henriques knew it, it was a fundamental key to the assertion of royal power. This is how the Charter comes into play, the legal instrument that established a direct, unbreakable contract between the king and the popular communities. The charters, granted throughout the first centuries throughout the Portuguese territory, were the basis of the municipalities. In other words, the municipality is the cell on which Portugal and Bragança were consolidated, in the strategic border, is a paradigmatic case of this.
A guided tour by the medievalist Arnaldo Melo and and the director of the Abade de Baçal Museum, Jorge da Costa.
