Luís Carlos Mestrinho, PhD student at EAAD/UM and Lab2PT/IN2PAST, will present the work “Experiencing Saltwater: Architectural Accessibility and Active Participation of People with Impairments in Urban Marine Spaces” at the 12th Cambridge Workshop on Universal Access and Assistive Technology.
The study examines the contribution of architectural accessibility to enabling human-nature interactions in marine spaces. It is proposed that the concept of blue space accessibility be understood as encompassing an active engagement with water, a practice that requires different considerations due to the challenging context of the marine environment. The study analyses how urban marine spaces can be fully experienced by users with disabilities, taking into account their right to participate in leisure and sport on an equal footing with other users of these spaces.
