Doctoral student Luís Carlos Mestrinho presents the paper “Reaching sustainable lighting in urban marine areas through the right balance of light: implications for the lighting design of the built environment”. This study explores sustainable lighting in urban marine environments and analyzes the key considerations for balancing human needs with the protection of marine ecosystems from the adverse effects of changes in the natural light regime resulting from artificial light at night and urban shading during the day. A narrative review and case studies are used to summarize the main issues and assess how they were managed using real-life examples.
