E-book publication “Bread, Meat and Water in Medieval Lisbon. Documentary memories” by Institute of Medieval Studies and the Lisbon Municipal Archive, with editorial coordination by Amélia Aguiar Andrade, Mário Farelo and Marta Gomes.
“The e-book Bread, meat and water in medieval Lisbon: Documentary memories results from the research work that was the basis of an exhibition promoted by the Institute of Medieval Studies and the Lisbon Municipal Archive / History, in 2019, in a fruitful association between archivists and researchers, the latter from several generations, as in addition to renowned medievalists there was the possibility of associating undergraduate and master’s students to the work team, combining university teaching with research, after all, one of the objectives of IEM and NOVA FCSH. This exhibition resulted in a detailed catalog that, from now on, will be freely accessible and a video of the same name, produced by the Lisbon Municipal Archive / Video Library, available on YouTube. In addition to medieval documents, archaeological artifacts resulting from the countless interventions that have been carried out in the city’s underground, representations – illuminations, drawings, etc. – and other cartographic materials produced expressly for the exhibition, a narrative was constructed that allowed visitors to confront the memory of the daily life of the medieval city through three basic elements of its residents’ diet: bread, meat and water.”
