In September 5, the presentation of the ‘Report on the project for the implementation of a cellulose-based textile fibre industry and its associated infrastructures’ took place at 11am, at the headquarters of the Galician Culture Council (Galicia, Spain).

On 4 March, the Diario Oficial de Galicia (DOG, no. 45 of 2024) published the announcement of 20 February 2024, from the Secretaría Xeral de Industria, by which the application for integrated environmental authorisation (AAI), the environmental impact study (EIA), the declaration of public utility and the project to set up a cellulose-based textile fibre industry and associated infrastructures, promoted by Greenfiber, S. L. was declared a strategic industrial project (PIE) by the Agreement of the Galician Regional Council of 29 December 2022, which is to be implemented in the municipality of Palas de Rei.

The Galician Culture Council decided to carry out an own-initiative report to assess the potential impacts on cultural and natural heritage of the strategic industrial project (PIE) (proxecto Gama). The complexity of the Gama project and its possible effects on the environment made it necessary for this report to be drawn up by experts with the capacity to analyse the different aspects of the project’s implementation – social, economic, industrial production and its effects – and to take account of their synergies.

The GCC agreed to set up a Temporary Technical Committee (TTC) to draw up a report on the project to implement a cellulose textile fibre industry and associated infrastructures, coordinated by Teresa Nieto Freire, with the participation of Lab2PT researcher Rebeca Blanco-Rotea in the cultural landscape chapter.
