Publication of the book VINCULUM. Institutions, Documents, and Links in Medieval and Modern Portugal: Manual of Administrative and Diplomatic History by Maria de Lurdes Rosa, Mário Farelo (Lab2PT/IN2PAST), Abel Rodrigues, and Arthur Curvelo, published by the University of Coimbra Press.
This work is the result of the adaptation into book format of the VINCULUM project website, dedicated to the Vinculum Information System Guide (hence the acronym “VISG”), and was designed with two main purposes: first, to ensure greater permanence of the content; second, to transform the website into a reference tool with “manual” characteristics, expanding its scope and giving it a format more suitable for consultation, especially by early-career researchers.
This book constitutes a research tool that aims to reconstruct the institutional, administrative, and information-producing system generated by the Vinculum Information System between the 14th and 17th centuries, both internally and externally. It is divided into two main parts: first, the delineation of the institutional network, characterizing the two main institutions that produced, received, and/or preserved information about the ties—the Crown and the Church; second, the characterization of the forms of information production, documentation, and archive formation, which includes a typological and diplomatic analysis of the ties. The legislation on ties was also compiled and systematized, which, to a large extent, corresponds to the intermediate stage between institutions and documents.
