1st IN2PAST Field Trip: Meetings "Problems of Primitivism" and Visit to Lab2PT
Weekend in the birthplace. Meetings “Problems of Primitivism” and visit to Lab2PT. An IN2PAST Field Trip
The first IN2PAST Field Trip takes place on the 28th and 29th of September, in Guimarães, with the Meetings “Problemas do Primitivism – from Portugal”, on the 28th in the afternoon, at the Centro Internacional das Artes José de Guimarães (CIAJG), and a visit to Lab2PT – Laboratory of Landscapes, Heritage and Territory, on the 29th in the morning, for researchers from the Associated Laboratory.
The Field Trips program that IN2PAST is preparing for 2024-2025 aims to take researchers and other interested audiences to the field, outside the university walls, namely to non-academic places where we spend an important part of our working time, whether museums, archives or archaeological sites, among many other territories and landscapes that we co-inhabit.
The Meetings, an initiative of the CIAJG [https://www.ciajg.pt] in partnership with IN2PAST [https://in2past.org] and BUALA [https://www.buala.org], are held between 2pm and 7:30pm. Open to the public, with a view to creating a community of reflection around the museum, they are an invitation to a guided tour of the exhibition “Problemas do Primitivism – from Portugal” [https://www.ciajg.pt/detail- events/18052024-problemas-do-primitividade-a-partir-de-portugal/] and the debate surrounding the problems raised by it, and the transdisciplinary approach to the concept of “primitivism” from Portugal.
Curated by the IHA – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST researcher Mariana Pinto dos Santos and the artistic director of the CIAJG, Marta Mestre, the exhibition, on display until November 17, 2024 at the CIAJG, reveals that “primitivism”, usually limited to debates of art criticism and history, when seen in relation to other disciplines and knowledge, allows us to expand the discussion on modernity, coloniality and art.
“This exhibition problematizes the concept of ‘primitivism’ by crossing disciplines such as anthropology, art history, economic, political and colonial history, also using non-academic knowledge and contemporary art, in dialogue with the collection of African objects bequeathed to the CIAJG by the artist José de Guimarães”, explains Mariana Pinto dos Santos. With more than 400 documents, works of art and quotations, the exhibition, in the words of the curator, “creates short circuits between images and texts by different authors, often with contradictory positions, in a montage that shows how the production of visual culture crosses the history of modernity with colonial history”.
“Its intra- and transdisciplinary character and the use of the museum as a space for interrogations about the past and its persistence in the present make it an exhibition to be debated in the context of IN2PAST and a practical example of its vocation to reflect on difficult heritage and the role of the museum in this reflection”, concludes the IHA – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST researcher.
For the afternoon of September 28th, the participation of the exhibition’s curators, Mariana Pinto dos Santos and Marta Mestre, researchers Elisabete Pereira (IHC – University of Évora / IN2PAST) and Nélia Dias (CRIA – Iscte / IN2PAST), from researcher Jean-Yves Durand (CRIA – University of Minho / IN2PAST), Françoise Vergès (political scientist, author of Decolonize the Museum: Absolute Disorder Program), Nuno Porto (Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia), and also the researchers Afonso Dias Ramos (IHA – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST), Catarina Laranjeiro (IHC – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST), Joana Cunha Leal (IHA – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST), Sónia Vespeira de Almeida (CRIA – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST) , Carla Cruz (Lab2PT – University of Minho / IN2PAST) and Francisco Mendes (Lab2PT – University of Minho / IN2PAST).
On Sunday, September 29th, IN2PAST also promotes a visit to the laboratories of its Minho research unit, Lab2PT, on the Azurém campus of the University of Minho, between 10am and 1pm, with a work/discussion meeting around the form how the space, profession and discipline of architecture mobilize the research agendas of the different units of the Associated Laboratory. This activity is not open to the public and is intended only for IN2PAST researchers.
The final schedule of activities for this weekend, including information about the dinner being prepared for Saturday the 28th, will be announced soon.
