Project Title
Living and dying in a fortified town – evolution of Valença’s funerary spaces and rituals
Abstract
This project aims to study the evolution of funerary spaces and rituals practiced in the fortified town of Valença, from its medieval foundation to the 19th century, exploring the results of archaeological work carried out there over the last 15 years. It is intended, on the one hand, to clarify the spatial organization of the burial areas associated with each religious building, taking into account individual, social and religious identities, outlining the chronology of the occupation phases. On the other hand, the paleoanthropological study of exhumed bone samples will provide data on the way of life of these populations, demographic evolution and population mobility. An attempt will also be made to correlate the funerary use of spaces with the urban development of the fortification, in order to identify possible constraints and pressures on funerary spaces over time and the influence on their organizations. The aim is, therefore, to recreate the entire urban, demographic, funerary and life dynamics of a militarized environment.
