Project Title
Military architecture of Portuguese origin in the Arabian Peninsula: the fortifications in Muscat (16th and 17th centuries)
Abstract
The project aims to study fortifications of Portuguese origin in Muscat, Oman. The Portuguese presence in this city began in 1507 with the founding of a trading post, essential in the geostrategic and commercial control of the region. Portuguese rule intensified until 1650, with emphasis on the period of the Dynastic Union (1580-1640), whose political and military situation can be recognized in the built work. Based on what is one of the largest-scale Portuguese fortified systems, consisting of two fortresses and an urban fence with watchtowers, the aim is to analyze it typologically, morphologically and metrically, crossing theoretical, treatise, geometric and constructive knowledge. This study will contribute to the understanding of a key piece of Portuguese military architecture from the 16th and 16th centuries through its design in Asia, in dialogue with the metropolis and the geography of European expansion. Available written, iconographic and cartographic sources will be used, viewing the transdisciplinary approach as an added value of this research.
