Shared wealth, announced salvation: the legacies of the “Brazilians” in the assistance of the Misericórdias in Minho (17th – 18th centuries)

Abstract

The present study focuses on the emigrants who went to Brazil and the legacies and donations left to the Misericórdias of Minho, a region of strong emigration in the 17th and 18th centuries. Through their example, these emigrants impelled others to follow them. Of those who went, there were those who returned and those who stayed, but the land of departure always remained in memory. The weight of these emigrants in the assistance is emphasized, aiming to save their souls and perpetuate their memory in the institution and the community. Defined as a long-term study, the main axes of analysis aim to know the "Brazilians", identify their motivations, analyze the bequests instituted, how they wished to be remembered and the impact they had on the Minho's Misericórdias. The bequests instituted by these benefactors were made mainly in the last moments of life, in testamentary inscriptions. The donations, on the other hand, were made during life.
