Project Title
Street transformations towards mobility, social and sustainable spaces: concepts and practises
Abstract
Streets accommodate elementary functions such as circulation and support for the built environment and are where countless activities and actions are accomplished, that are fundamental to daily life in this public space. These functions, and some of the transformations that naturally occur in this space, are currently demanding new challenges. These require reflection on the design of cities and streets - linear and continuous spaces that function in a network, and which are predominantly public. The reduction of air pollution, promotion of accessibility, the introduction of new forms and flows of mobility (pedestrians, cyclists, logistics, etc.), and the creation of inclusive urban structures and green spaces, are some of the principles that currently guide political agendas and, consequently, municipal plans and urban projects, with different approaches in which traffic planning is not the dominant aspect of street design. However, how are these plans implemented and what new elements or tools are introduced into street design? Therefore, this research plan proposes an investigation of street transformation processes, from an architectural and urban planning perspective, intending to study and map projects in a European context over the last ten years, delving into the methodologies, procedures, tools and design principles that have attended to their current demands. The research delivers a set of multi-case studies structured by an analytical framework, intending to launch design principles. The aim is to collect and describe how different specialities, approaches, materialities and forms are considered when designing streets.
