Project Title
Human vulnerability in written sources: exploring psychobiological determinants in the city of Porto in the 19th century (1832-1899)
Abstract
The 19th century in the city of Porto witnessed wars, revolutions and epidemics that exposed socio-urban problems and inequalities in access to healthcare, denoting several weaknesses with great social impact and exposing multiple dimensions of human vulnerability: the focus of this investigation. This project explores human vulnerability in the context of adverse events experienced in the city between 1832 and 1899, by identifying and analyzing sociobiological factors of vulnerability from a wide range of historical sources. This study will complement the BeFRAIL project - Porto in Times of Cholera and War (with funding from FCT - 2022.02398.PTDC), which explores human vulnerability through the bioarchaeological and archaeological study of the cemetery of the Venerável Ordem Terceira de Nossa Senhora do Carmo. In addition to its unique contribution, the combination and comparison of data from historical sources with data from other disciplines endow this project with great originality.
