Project Title
Classification of Connections and Joints in Buildings for Sustainability (CCJB-S): a provisional scheme
Abstract
The research focuses on the importance of connections and joints in buildings for sustainable architectural and construction practices. It is based on evidence that traditional construction methods and contamination of materials in connections can make it difficult to recover and reuse construction materials, leading to an increase in construction waste. The research reviews existing literature on the circularity of construction materials and the properties of connections, and proposes a classification system called Classification of Connections and Joints in Buildings for Sustainability (CCJB-S) to categorize different types of connections based on its properties. The CCJB-S incorporates facets such as geometry, structure, environment, function and processes to provide a comprehensive framework for understanding and categorizing connections. In a still provisional representation of the CCJB-S it is demonstrated how different properties of connections can be combined to form composite classes. The overlaps and semantic variations between existing structures are addressed and the contextual nature of the CJB's sustainability-related properties are considered. Detailed definitions and an autonomous coding system for each category are incorporated into the CCJB-S. Overall, we seek to contribute to the understanding of connections and their role in sustainable architecture and construction and, through the CCJB-S, provide an organization and categorization of connection properties, to assist architects, researchers and product designers in making informed design decisions.
