Project Title
Forgiving so as not to litigate: justice, crime, gender and female honor in Minho (17th and 18th centuries)
Abstract
Despite the more recent advances produced by national and international historiography that sought to intercept gender issues with justice during the Old Regime, our investigation will allow us to discuss the role of women as agents of crimes against honor in the contexts of mediation settled by notarial deed . The objective is to discuss women as passive and active agents in justice, in the Minho region, in particular in the regions of Braga and Viana da Foz do Lima, during the 17th and 18th centuries. Our analysis will be made using handwritten notary sources ("perdões de parte") and printed documentation worked according to qualitative and quantitative methodologies. “Forgive in order not to litigate: justice, crime, gender and female honor in Minho (17th and 18th centuries)” is an innovative study project that problematizes the concepts of gender, violence, justice, crime, power, authority and female legal capacity.
