Project Title
Algae extraction and constructive culture in the formalization of the landscape: Sargasso and Gelidium in the north and south of Portugal
Abstract
This PhD research is part of the broader objectives of the Fishing Architecture project (Lab2PT and CIIMAR) which explores the possibility of reading the Portuguese built environment, by repositioning the gaze from sea to land, and through the lenses of marine species. The research orbits around two specific macro-algae that were extracted from the rocky shore of the Portuguese coast, and from which it is possible to translate two forms of building culture in the making of landscape: in the north of the country, the use of Sargasso in the transformation of dune sands into masse-like agricultural fields, and in the south, the extraction of Gelidium corneum in the formalization of a constellation of buildings linked to the agar industry.
