Project Title
The (im)permanence of the sertanejo territory: Canudos and Caldeirão as evidence of the socio-spatial complexity of the Sertão Region of Northeast Brazil
Abstract
The investigation explores the complex plot of the Sertão region of northeastern Brazil territory’ formation. The sertaneja population’ constitution, its popular traditions, memories, ways of life, social formation and economic cycles assemble the analyzed fields. The miscegenated, mestizo culture, magnificent since its origins, whether from the native indigenous, African or Iberian people, has modified and adapted itself to the landscape of the caatingas, the predominant biome in the region in vogue. As a result of the hybrid adjustment of cultures, and never disregarding the impious and devastating slavery regime that took place for more than three centuries in the region, the architecture, the production of inhabited space and the resulting use of the territory represent the dynamics of economic forces, external and internal, that happened in the formation of the territory. The (im)permanence of relationships and social conflicts over land use and possession, between landowners and peasant populations, repeatedly reinforce colonial structures, tending to reproduce, in space, social, territorial and technological segregation, such as access to water, arable land and current production methods. The understanding and exploration of social relations (that is, of space production) established over the centuries in the region will help other interpretations and possible re-readings, landmarks, of the territory. Thus, the knowledge of the territory’ formation, as well as its possible reinterpretations, can support paths to the continuity of sertanejo people’ traditions and, in the same interim, the transformation of the region into a productive social and economic area.
