Project Title
Signs of the past in a moving landscape: segmented circles from the Iberian Northwest
Abstract
The main goal of this work is to study the engraved and painted segmented circles from a significant part of the Iberian Northwest, in interaction with the settlements and the physical environment, thus contributing for a better understanding of the socio-ideological dynamics of Bronze Age communities. To achieve these goals, premises from Postprocessual Archeology, Art Anthropology, Spacial Archeology and Archaeoastronomy methodologies combined with will be used, in addition to the use of an System of Geographical Information. This unprecedented work aims to assess the possibility of these engraved places being, simultaneously, shrines to celestial entities and astronomical observatories, providing better knowledge about the interrelations of these communities with physical and celestial space. The data will be scientifically disseminated in several languages (Portuguese, Spanish and English). They will also be publicly disclosed so that the public in general, territory managers, teachers, students can be active in safeguarding and enhancing this heritage.
