Project Title

Demographic and social dynamics on Pico Island between the 17th and 20th centuries

Abstract

This project aims to deepen the knowledge of the mortality phenomenon on the island of Pico, in a longitudinal perspective, from the late seventeenth century to the twentieth century. The study of an island, due to its location and geographical characteristics, provides the historian an authentic laboratory, considering that the isolation of populations makes the task of following individual trajectories more feasible. The demographic analyses that have been carried out on the communities of Pico island show, even in the 18th century, a soft mortality, which results in a very high average life expectancy at birth for the period, with important consequences on the population balance, namely at the level of emigration. In this project we will try to evaluate the characteristics of mortality in Pico island, contrasting different communities and social groups. We will try to understand the reasons that provided a long life to those populations and how the population movement was articulated with the high emigration.
