Project Title
Giving “heritages”, “building” families: marriage dowries, in the city of Braga, in the 18th century
Abstract
The present line of research focuses on the endowment practices and the matrimonial models in force in the city of Braga, between the years 1700 and 1800. Temporally defined as a long-term study, the main axes of analysis intend to articulate the influence of dowries in marriage systems, in the pre-industrial Minho society, in addition to the impact exerted on the family structures in Braga, throughout the Ancien Régime. Linked to this purpose, the respective work intends to contribute to the development of the history of endowment, suggested, its potentiality, by the scientific literature of the last quarter of the 20th century. However, the recent interest of European historiography in the study of endowments demonstrates their importance for a deeper understanding of the (re)constitution of families in the modern period, as well as their influence on interpersonal experiences, the preservation of patrimonial assets and the transmission and organization of inheritance systems across generations.
