Project Title

The port of Porto - Hypertextual cartography

Abstract

This research proposal starts from the premise that the description of a territory has a projectual potential and, consequently, the hability to transforme what it describes. The content, that is, what one chooses to represent and the way in which one chooses to do it are not only neutral as they have consequences in the so-called reality. The case study to test this hypothesis corresponds to the urban settlings on both banks of the Douro river in the riverside extension of Porto and VN de Gaia, from Foz to Freixo. From this area, only the physical elements previously related twith port activity were selected: an historically very ancient and continued reality, which belongs to the long time, and that was abruptly stopped. The cartographic form to be adopted will represent these elements autonomously, allowing to find in the multiplicity of reading combinations, as in a hypertext, very sbtle or invisible links between these fragments disconnected in space.
