Project Title

Music and society in 19th century Pernambuco

Abstract

Pernambuco was one of the main Brazilian provinces in the 19th century. XIX. Several foreigners report intense musical activity, from concerts in theaters to music in the streets. This research seeks to carry out an approach to city life in musical and social terms, in order to understand the role of music in the sociabilities of the time. It is our purpose to analyze and discuss musical programs, places of musical practice, from the stage to the street, building a dynamic that attracts from foreign artists to national and local ones. We also aim to analyze the sequence of musical shows in the city throughout the year, highlighting the promoters of these activities. We will seek to highlight aspects of the trajectories of some of the musicians, inserted in different social groups of that society, through musical practice in religious festivities, through training and teaching spaces, sales of musical articles, reaching the theaters. Part of this intense musical activity is recorded in various periodicals.
