Project Title
Full-scale Additive Manufacturing: Methodologies, techniques and processes for prototyping architectural components with complex geometries
Abstract
The integration of digital technologies in architectural design expands the possibilities for optimizing and customizing of design solutions. Additive Manufacturing (AM) is one of the most relevant techniques with the greatest potential to respond to this context, but there is still a large margin of uncertainty in the way in which it will be integrated into current construction systems. Divided into continuous production techniques or through discrete components, this technique stimulates the prototyping of innovative architectural systems. The present investigation intends to simplify the AM processes through the discretization in medium-sized components and the connection between them, with a view to their application in full-scale construction. To the possibilities of ceramic AM, explored in the Advanced Ceramics Laboratory (ACL), it is proposed to add cementitious, polymeric or metallic matrix materials, for the development of components and intelligent connection systems, which allow adaptive, reversible and reusable solutions, in real dimension.
