Project Title
Map the Serpent. Spatialization of the snake cult in the northwest of the peninsula
Abstract
The recognition, by several early and mid 20th century researchers, of widespread pre-Roman engravings with serpentiform figures, gave rise to the argument of serpent worshiping (ophiolatry) among the Protohistoric peoples of northwestern Iberia. This interpretation is supported by the Latin poem Ora Maritima (4th century CE) by Rufo Avieno, describing the expulsion of the Oestreminis by a serpent attack in the mid-6th century BCE, consequently renaming the land as Ophiussa. Despite the diversity of current bibliography, which spans from the deep study of specific cases to the interpretation of their globality, there is no geographical analysis informed and systematised by graphic representations that would allow us to recognise the geography of the cult. The study of ophiolatry from this angle will bring new clues to the interpretation of a time, place, and population that shaped the culture of the peninsular northwest, all of which remain unknown.
