Project Title
Poor, sick and ragged? Clothing of the poor in the urban welfare context of Porto and Lisbon (17th and 18th centuries)
Abstract
Despite many advances in national and international historiography, the practices of history have kept the cultural experiences of materiality of the rich and the poor in separate spheres. If so much has been told about the things of the elites, the daily life of the poor abounds in its silences. This project aims to understand the resources, mechanisms, shapes and typologies of the clothes of the poor in the application of the concept of clothing. This study problematises the culture of clothing applied to the contexts of assistance and charity, in Lisbon and Porto, during the 17th and 18th centuries. We present, from the analysis of manuscript and printed sources, an innovative work in the Portuguese historiographical panorama that intends to discuss the socially dressed body of the poor. It is our aim to debate the concepts of poverty, identity, gender, disease, fashion, civility and ritualization in the logics of power and hierarchy during the Ancien Regime.
