Project Title

Ornamental and Industrial Rocks of Northern Portugal - occurrence, territorial planning and characterization of the main extraction centers

Abstract

The DGEG holds a vast collection of information related to mineral mass exploitation activities, which is currently dispersed across physical archives without digital support. It is crucial to conduct a study that compiles this content, enabling its analysis, processing, and synthesis to incorporate it into decision-making processes within the scope of this public administration body’s functions. The primary objective of this doctoral program is to understand the distribution of quarries based on their lithotypes through petrographic, geochemical, and structural analysis of rock masses, with particular emphasis on rock mass compartmentalization studies. At the very least, the results obtained from this doctoral research are expected to lead to proposals for the rational use of DGEG’s archives, innovative approaches to lithotype cataloging, and contributions towards optimizing mineral mass licensing processes.
