Project Title
The medicalization of childbirth in Portugal: medical knowledge and hospital practices in Braga, between 1870 and 1945
Abstract
Using documentary and bibliographical sources, it was possible to analyze the debate on the medicalization of childbirth in Portugal in the European context, taking into account the national political-ideological trajectory, characterizing the contours of the debate involving: doctors, midwives, jurists, politicians and religious people about the medicalization of childbirth in Portugal and its main protagonists. For this, it was necessary to characterize the historical and social context of Braga at the time of the medicalization of childbirth in the country; also characterizing the existing equipment networks (public and private hospitals; medical posts; dispensaries and others) and the responses of midwives in the region under study (1870 to 1945). Essential for this was to emphasize the importance of actors such as: doctors, midwives, nurses and parturients present based on the case study on Braga, thus analyzing the dynamics regarding the medicalization of childbirth in a comparative perspective.
