Project Title

Multiscale analysis of the territorial dynamics of Alto Minho (Portugal) in the Iron Age. The Oppida phenomenon

Abstract

Since the 19th century, various studies and questions related to the occupation of the NE peninsula during the Iron Age have allowed us to propose analytical models that contribute to knowledge. There are different ways of occupying this territory. However, this project, centered on the Alto Minho region, intends to carry out an approach that crosses different scales of analysis, capable of examining the territorial dynamics that they recorded in it. It is linked to current affairs, on a macro-spatial, or objective, scale, and also, on a semi-micro scale, to analysis. It starts from an exhaustive characterization of the territory and its population, the social, economic and political dynamics between cities, carrying out x-spatial analyses. and directing special attention to the oppida, which present themselves as fundamental and characterizing the societies that inhabited this landscape. It also includes an approximation and comparison between the most significant examples of this type of cities in the Alto Minho region and some examples found in southern Galicia.
