Project Title
Portuguese women and the colonial empire in the first half of the 20th century: representations, discourses and practices
Abstract
In a period of affirmation of the Portuguese colonial empire in the face of «European expansionist fever», the study focuses on the construction of the imperial identity of Portuguese female elites, and its manifestations, during the first half of the 20th century. A situation in which women emerge as an integral part of a historically colonizing nation by propagating, enabling and legitimizing colonizing strategies in the different political-ideological frameworks included in this temporal arc: the First Republic and the first part of the Estado Novo. In this context, not only the deconstruction of the idea of Portuguese colonialism as a “male enterprise” stands out, but also the relevance of the female role in the rooting of the myths that support it.
