Project Title
Morphology and Tectonics of the use of paper in contemporary architecture: Exploration of additive manufacturing and construction systems
Abstract
The search for sustainable and economic building materials is currently a major concern of society. It is well known that the traditional construction industry requires a high consumption of inorganic materials implying the excessive production of waste. It is therefore pertinent/urgent to promote the architectural use of low-cost biodegradable and recyclable materials. The present research aims at promoting the use of cellulose matrix materials, which due to the Portuguese paper industry tradition may have a real impact for the exploration of innovative solutions and alternative/sustainable construction systems. In particular, it is intended to take advantage of additive manufacturing techniques and the incorporation of natural fibres that improve the behaviour and durability of the materials and proposed applications.
