Project Title
Urban and peri-urban evolution of Braga between 1070 and 1510: connecting the medieval city and its suburbs.
Abstract
Within the scope of Urban History, this thesis deals with the city of Braga and its outskirts in the Middle Ages, between 1070 and 1510. The period begins with the restoration of the Episcopal Cathedral and the urban renaissance of Braga, and ends in 1510 due to the dating of the sources selected writings, without compromising the historical analysis, as major modern urban changes occur later with the arrival of D. Diogo de Sousa at the estate. Using the Books of Tombo (14th and 15th centuries) and Deadlines (15th and 16th centuries) from the chapter table, the project will organize databases for statistical and qualitative analyzes of the chapter's assets. The aim is to demonstrate the different rhythms of urban evolution of Braga and its peri-urban area, illustrating the historical processes of these changes. The investigation also examines the agrarian composition, agropastoral exploitation and natural resources in the surrounding areas, relating them to medieval urban life. The research will include cartographic montages of the city plan to better understand the historical-temporal dynamics of urban space.
