Project Title

Theory, Design and Construction of the Bulwarked Defensive System in the Minho River Valley. From the Reign of King Philip III to the End of the Seven Years' War, 1621-1763

Abstract

In Portugal, during the War of the Restoration (1640-1668), a structured network of fortified bastion systems was established along the Atlantic coast and the land border. The research field, circumscribed between 1621-1763, focuses on fortified military architecture, with particular incidence in the Minho River Valley. A complex defensive system was developed in this river valley, which allowed for the defence, configuration and delimitation of the national territory. This system, constituted by 46 buildings (permanent and campaign), is subdivided in 5 subsystems centralized in the respective fortress, being the Vila Nova de Cerveira-Goián subsystem the focus of this research. In this sense, the research focuses on the design of the military buildings as an element of mediation between the theoretical issues and the ideal models exposed in the fortification treatises and the confrontation with the real circumstances of their construction and implantation on the territory, verified through the fortified system built along the Minho River Valley.
