2022 - The medieval Jewish minority in the urban area of the Kingdom of León: archaeological and documentary analysis
The Castrum Iudeirum/ Jewish quarter of Puente Castro/ or Castro de los Judíos (León – Spain) constitutes one of the most important medieval archaeological sites in the north of the peninsula in terms of knowledge about the Hebrew minority, who occupied the place between the beginning of the 11th century and the end of the 12th century, the moment of its destruction by Alfonso VIII of Castile. In fact, it represents the only Jewish urban center prior to the 12th century in all of Europe. This project aims to enrich knowledge about urbanism and the daily life of its inhabitants, namely through the study of its material culture, having exhumed thousands of ceramic fragments, as well as countless numisms, documenting aspects related to everyday life. and commercial dynamics. It also intends to enhance the archaeological site in order to reinforce the historical heritage of the city of León. To this end, it contemplates the carrying out of annual excavation campaigns, in which, among others, students from the University of León collaborate, but which have also had the contribution of elements from the UMinho Archeology course.
