2021 - Brutalist Oporto
This book, Porto Brutalista” published by the publisher Circo de Ideias and edited by Pedro Baía and Magda Seifert, presents a selection of 20 works located in Porto, Gaia and Matosinhos, in a quest to test new possibilities of interpretation of an architecture produced with affinities constructions and materials associated with Brutalism.
The editorial and research project allowed the development of different levels of critical approach to the object of study. Álvaro Siza talked about the topic of Brutalism and some issues that arose during the project. Ben Highmore visited some of the selected works in Porto and wrote an essay from a cultural perspective. Tiago Lopes Dias and Alexandra Areia wrote essays based on the 10 works selected from each century. Pedro Treno focused on each of the 20 works and wrote short texts with a critical framework. Francisco Ascensão and Luca Bosco rehearsed a photographic report of the 20 works, according to a sensitivity arising from the Brutalist language.
The editorial project had the support of Porto City Hall within the scope of the Criatório 2018 artistic creation support program.
The book was selected for the 2020 FAD Award, in the Thought and Criticism category.
