2024 - A Paisagem da Arte Rupestre na Pré e Proto-História no Alto Douro Português
The Côa Valley emerges as one of the main world references in the study of Pre and Proto-historic Art. The intense research carried out there over the last 30 years has generated hundreds of publications that have resonated internationally, contributing decisively to increasing knowledge of the artistic manifestations of past societies.
However, despite the identification of more than 50 rock art cores from the 1st millennium BC. C. in the region, with more than 6,000 motifs inventoried to date, the study of the settlement associated with these artistic manifestations is still at an early stage. The discovery of archaeological sites that can accurately contextualize and date these cultural expressions continues to be a challenge, especially as it relates to the end of the millennium.
It was in this context that the Workshop “A Paisagem da Arte Rupestre na Pré e Proto-História no Alto Douro Português” emerged, held on December 4, 2023 in Vila Nova de Foz Côa. This scientific meeting, promoted by the RARAA project (COA/OVD/0097/2019), in collaboration with the Archeology Unit and Lab2PT of the University of Minho, the Côa Parque Foundation, the CEAACP of the University of Coimbra, and the Institute of Archeology of the University of Coimbra, aimed to discuss and deepen the study of Iron Age rock art in the Côa Valley Archaeological Park and explore the connections between artistic manifestations and human occupations.
This book, A Paisagem da Arte Rupestre na Pré e Proto-História no Alto Douro Português, constitutes a written memory of this meeting and brings together some reflections and works presented.
