The contents of this volume have various origins and are intended to reveal the state of play of the Doctorate in Architecture at UMinho’s School of Architecture, Art and Design (EAAD) in the 2023/2024 academic year. As a whole, they seek to capture a panorama that includes almost three dozen investigations carried out within EAAD’s 3rd cycle (each at a different stage of completion) and also a retrospective essay on an investigation carried out outside the Organic Unit (this one already completed).

With so many different contributions, methods and objectives, objects and case studies, this volume, while appearing to be idiosyncratic, nonetheless shows a connected body of research, with moments and movements collated autonomously and from different angles, but perhaps creating more or less apparent and more or less emerging links. It is therefore no coincidence that some of the topics raised and questioned here are repeated, revealing a common modernity in which disciplinary convergence does not prevent its expansion or even containment. In fact, with the exception of this first text and the last one, the volume is organized in two parts: the first, whose material is based on textual and imagistic summaries of the doctoral work in progress (the sole responsibility of the students), consists of twenty-nine summaries (of the research); and the second, composed essentially of photographic and essayistic material, is based on a record of the activities that took place on the day of the doctorate.
