International Congress "Mário Soares: a life between centuries"
Mário Soares (1924-2017), one of the most relevant and multifaceted personalities in contemporary Portuguese history, played a significant role in key events of different times, whether in the struggles he fought as a committed citizen or in the exercise of the multiple roles he held. Therefore, it is possible to study its trajectory and its action from many perspectives, calling upon different disciplinary areas, analyzing varied sources and crossing methodologies.
The centenary of Mário Soares’ birth is an opportunity to bring together the scientific community, analyzing, debating and reflecting on his intellectual and political trajectory.
With the figure of Mário Soares as the main object of analysis, the following thematic axes are proposed:
̶ In resistance to the Estado Novo, deportation and exile
̶ The construction of Democracy after April 25th
̶ Social challenges and public policies
̶ Decolonization and relations with Portuguese-speaking countries
̶ Democratic socialism: from ideas to practice
̶ The construction of Europe and the world vision
̶ Defense of the environment and oceans
̶ Education, science and culture
̶ Historiographical and intellectual work of Mário Soares
̶ Media representations and historical memory of Mário Soares
Communication proposals must be sent using this form, which must include: name of the author(s), institutional affiliation, title of the proposal, abstract of no more than 500 words, three keywords, brief biographical note (200 words maximum) and contacts (email and telephone).
Proposals are accepted in Portuguese, Spanish, English and French.
Submission of proposals: until May 15, 2025.
Communication of results: until June 30, 2025
