Superfícies – Condições do aparecer: fazer e aflorar is the second edition of an interdisciplinary meeting, jointly organized by iArtes* and PRAXIS of the Faculty of Arts and Letters of UBI and, from this edition onwards, by Lab2PT and the School of Architecture, Art and Design of the University of Minho.

As in the first edition, its purpose remains to promote a transversal interdisciplinary approach that results in a reflection to be launched from the places of knowledge and experience they bring. These can be from philosophy, architecture, design, music, mathematics, engineering, the arts, other areas, and places of intersection between them.

The contemporary urgency to manifest and illuminate what is on the surface neglects the depth of the processes and the mediations that sustain it. The readiness of the ready-made becomes universal, but it is sustained by the obscuring of making; it demands the fiction of the “already done” while subordinating means, resources, and materials that only matter in this accessory condition. A superficialization of the surfaces themselves occurs: they are torn from their depth, leading us to an experience with our backs turned to what makes up our own body.

Therefore, it is important to practice questioning the conditions of appearance. These are mediations, narratives, materialities, whose meaning and experience it is important to delve into, as if we were taking the surface to the depths, as if we were bringing it to the surface, but reversing the direction of movement, from the outside in.
To emerge is a beautiful way of saying that something comes to the surface of the Earth. There are rocky outcrops when veins and veins from the depths appear exposed on the Earth’s surface. And there is also the surfacing of subjects as if opening them so that, eventually, the truth may also surface, like a revealing and an happening condensed in the idea of ​​something becoming a flower. Something metamorphoses to give rise to a flower, its petals on the delicate surface of the world.

In this second encounter on surfaces, the challenge is to touch upon the conditions of this surfacing. We want to go back to the genesis of what is given to be experienced in a legible and meaningful way, delving into the thickness of fundamental binomials:
