This conference aims to pave the way towards a better understanding of this complex context of the Schism (1378-1417). This cannot be done without a deeper insight into the underlying political and social contexts, and includes taking into account the transformative effects of cultural and artistic phenomena.

Ultimately, the papers presented will address the intricacies that link the crisis in the foreground (the papacy) with the crises operative beneath the surface. We shall explore how the resolution of one crisis – be it the overarching or the local one – might serve as a tool for resolving the other.
