SHARE.EAAD #31 Tiago Rodrigues | Theory, Design and Construction of the Bulwarked Defensive System in the Minho River Valley. From the Reign of King Philip III to the End of the Seven Years’ War, 1621-1763
During the Restoration War (1640-1668) in Portugal, a network of Fortified Systems was created in response to the war between the Kingdom of Portugal and the Crown of Castile. Based on this circumstance, the field of research, set between 1621-1763, focuses on the design of buildings as a mediation between the theoretical models and procedures set out in fortification treatises (manuals of the “art” of fortification) and, on the other hand, the confrontation between the designers and the real circumstances (pre-existences, configuration of the territory, construction practices and war requirements) of their implantation, construction and implementation, verified through the remains built in the Minho River Valley.
